Extraction and Tooth Pulling

Many adults get a tooth extraction for a number of reasons. When a tooth becomes severely damaged, or a patient wants to get his tooth aligned, or they suffer from a serious tooth infection, a tooth extraction is often necessary. Dental extractions must be performed by trained and experienced dentists in Aurora, Ontario that will minimize pain and discomfort for their patients. At E&E Dentistry a skilled dentistwill perform your tooth extraction procedure in Aurora.

Types of Dental Extraction Procedures

There are two types of tooth extraction procedures:

1.       Simple Extraction: The dentist uses an elevator to loosen the tooth and forceps to extract it. Simple extraction is performed on teeth that are visible.

2.       Surgical Extraction: The dentist makes an incision to remove the soft tissue covering the tooth in order to cut the bone around it or cut the tooth itself before extracting it.

Recovery After Extraction

Recovery after the tooth extraction takes a couple of days. The following will help in minimizing discomfort post extraction:

1.       Patients are prescribed painkillers to ease the pain.

2.       Apply an ice pack to reduce shooting pains.

3.       Strictly avoid smoking as it disrupts the healing process.

4.       Maintain good oral hygiene, but avoid the extraction site.

5.       Avoid eating foods that are hard to chew. Have soft food or soups instead.

6.       Do not spit or rinse, as it can displace the gauze pad in the socket, which can cause clotting.

7.       Avoid lying flat. Instead, elevate your head with a pillow to prevent bleeding.

8.       Do not drink from a straw for 24 hours after the tooth pulling.
