Invisalign or Braces: Which Treatment to Choose

Thanks to constant advancing technologies and developments in dental care, newer and better teeth straightening solutions are at the disposal of patients who need to get their smiles fixed. In place of traditional metal braces, many people are becoming interested in one of today’s relatively new means of straightening crooked smiles: Invisalign.

However, Invisalign isn’t always a better choice over traditional straightening methods. There are times when, in specific cases, traditional treatment proves more efficient in teeth alignment.

Braces make use of metal brackets and wires designed to move teeth gradually into proper position. Metal brackets are glued to the teeth and then tied together using wires, along with tiny rubber bands. The rubber bands serve to protect the mouth from scratches and are also used to pull teeth into place. More modern systems make use of clear metal brackets or ones that closely match the natural color of teeth to make braces more discreet. Despite efforts to make traditional braces unnoticeable, however, they cannot match the same subtlety and unobtrusive properties that Invisalign offers.

The latter makes use of clear aligners that are virtually invisible when worn. The aligner trays are made out of smooth, BPA-free transparent plastic, which can be comfortably worn over teeth and then removed when eating or drinking something other than water. Cleaning teeth is also much easier as there are no metal wires or brackets that get in the way.

There are pros and cons to both treatments but consulting with your orthodontist will help you decide which system will suit your particular case better. A critical consideration you must make when choosing between traditional braces and Invisalign is effective in addressing complex issues you may have. Some may also want to consider the added chore of removing and reattaching their aligner trays, which requires good self-discipline if you wish to stay on track with the treatment.
